The 2024 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their fundamental discoveries in machine learning, which paved the way for how artificial intelligence is used today.

US scientist John Hopfield and British-Canadian researcher Geoffrey Hinton have won the Nobel Prize in Physics for creating the "building blocks of machine learning," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday.

The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Hopfield of Princeton University and Geoffrey Hinton of University of Toronto for discoveries and inventions that formed the building blocks of machine learning underpinning many of today’s most powerful artificial-intelligence models.
