Wells Fargo & Co. finally escaped a Federal Reserve asset cap that has restricted its size for more than seven years, unleashing the firm from the unprecedented punishment in a major win for Chief Executive Officer Charlie Scharf.

Wells Fargo was released from a punitive, seven-year-long $1.95 trillion cap on its assets on Tuesday after the U.S. Federal Reserve lifted the regulatory measure, allowing the bank to pursue unimpeded growth.

The Federal Reserve said Tuesday that Wells Fargo is no longer subject to the restraints the Fed placed on the bank in 2018 for having a toxic sales and banking culture.
