Japanese researchers just sent the world’s first wooden satellite to space, as reported by CNN. LignoSat, named after the Latin word for wood, was developed by Kyoto University and a company called Sumitomo Forestry.

It is expected to be flown to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX rocket and later released into an orbit about 400km (250miles) above the Earth. The satellite, made of magnolia wood, is durable and can withstand the hostile space environment,

The tiny satellite built by Japan will test the suitability of timber as a renewable material in space.
