When Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot this month, their golden retriever was grievously wounded and had to be euthanized.

Minnesota is honoring the golden retriever named Gilbert belonging to a prominent state lawmaker and her husband who were shot to death in their home.

The public has the opportunity on Friday to bid farewell to slain Democratic Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their dog, Gilbert — all of whom are lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda.
