A sinkhole that opened up along Interstate 80 in northern New Jersey has forced authorities to close the eastbound lanes of the heavily traveled highway.

A sinkhole on a New Jersey interstate that's closed eastbound traffic for over 24 hours was caused by a collapse of abandoned mineshaft, officials said.

Interstate 80 reopened through North Jersey on Monday morning, four days after a sinkhole swallowed the road and snarled traffic during the busy holiday weekend. Repair crews worked around the clock to fix the damage in Wharton, where a giant chunk of the right shoulder in the eastbound lanes collapsed on Thursday morning.
