On 26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.1 undersea earthquake struck 240km west of Sumatra, Indonesia, rupturing the greatest fault length of any recorded earthquake.

Memory canonization is evident in the creation of disaster monuments and commemoration events, including in Aceh. Unfortunately, many survivors feel detached from the monuments because they do not evoke personal memories of the tsunami.

Traumatised by the Indian Ocean tsunami that hit Indonesia 20 years ago, Teuku Hafid Hududillah has spent his adult life making sure that if disaster strikes again, his home province of Aceh will be ready.
