In the post-credits scene, set about a year after the events of the film, the Thunderbolts - now officially rechristened as the New Avengers - lament their rivalry with Sam Wilson/Captain America's own version of the Avengers, who are at odds with their own government sanctioned team.

The asterisk hullabaloo had everything to do with setting up The New Avengers ahead of Avengers: Doomsday ’s release next summer. While I wasn’t exactly surprised about the reveal when the movie reached its end (especially considering we already know the Thunderbolts* cast are part of the Avengers;
