South Dakota voters are deciding whether to add protections for abortion rights to the state constitution and potentially overturn the state’s abortion ban.

South Dakota, a red state, will have three Electoral College votes for the presidential race. The presidential election winner must earn 270 Electoral College votes to assume office. Early voting in South Dakota started on Sept. 20. All polls for in-person voting on Election Day run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In Siouxland, there are four races for the Legislature, one for the South Dakota Senate and three for the South Dakota House.

Another ballot measure could give grocery shoppers relief by removing the state sales tax on food. South Dakota lowered its general sales tax last year from 4.5 percent to 4.2 percent, and the new initiative would eliminate taxes on most food items, excluding alcohol and prepared meals.

South Dakota voters will decide today whether to continue paying sales taxes on groceries, as well as on other items that could possibly include cigarettes. Currently, the state collects sales taxes on food and beverages.
