Updated at 1:56 p.m. ET. COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Army is ditching the hot, ill-fitting black wool berets that soldiers have worn for years and allowing them to go back to their old, brimmed patrol caps.

The Army’s patrol cap replaced the black beret as the default headgear for the Army Combat Uniform in 2011, but it’s still required for soldiers wearing the Army Service Uniform (ASU).

It started in 2000 when Army Gen. Eric Shinseki, then the service’s chief of staff, adopted the black beret as the garrison cap for the conventional force to increase esprit de corps.
