John Jumper, who received his master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, shared the prize with Dennis Hassabis — who works with Jumper at Google DeepMind — and David Baker, who works at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper were part of a Google DeepMind team whose A.I. technology predicts the shape of proteins. David Baker designed “a new protein that was unlike any other,” the committee said.

The Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to three scientists today — two of whom are significant figures at Google DeepMind — for their work around proteins, which the Nobel Prize committee describes as the “chemical tools of life.
