Sovereignty won the neck-and-neck race with Journalism down the final stretch of the Kentucky Derby. The horse produced a second Derby win for trainer William I. Mott and the first Derby victory for jockey Junior Alvarado. Mott won his other Derby title with Country House in 2019, but that victory came after Maximum Security was disqualified.

As usual, the Kentucky Derby got so much attention that it eclipsed a lot of other top-shelf racing during the first weekend in May, involving champions, would-be contenders and many other famous names.
