The Canadian response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats and tariffs has become a primary issue in the election. The main party leaders addressed it again on Friday as they made their final pitches to voters.

Trump has threatened to slap steep tariffs on Canadian goods, and both Carney and Poilievre said that, if elected, they would accelerate renegotiations of the countries' free trade deal in an effort to end the uncertainty hurting both of their economies.

Trump is reinserting himself into Canadian politics ahead of its parliamentary election, reiterating his proposal for the nation to become the "51st state."
