About 90,000 Vancouver Island Hydro customers woke without power and ferries cancelled across the board to the Lower Mainland the morning of Nov. 20. More than 175,000 customers have been restored – or nearly two-thirds of the more than 272,000 originally impacted across the province, BC Hydro said in a 6:30 a.m. update.

Thousands of Vancouver Island residents were without power, and several highways closed Tuesday evening after a 'bomb cyclone' brought powerful winds to the B.C. coast.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says a "significant" storm is on the way to pummel the South Coast with high winds.

Unlike the hailstorm, however, Environment Canada has observed the potent weather system moving south from the Gulf of Alaska since last week. The bomb cyclone - also called rapid cyclogenesis - occurs when a mid-latitude, low-pressure system drops over 24 millibars in 24 hours.

B.C. has been hit by a series of powerful fall storms, including an atmospheric river that caused flash flooding in Metro Vancouver in mid-October. A lightning storm overnight and early Monday covered parts of Metro Vancouver in hail.

Environment Canada is warning about a "significant fall storm" expected from Tuesday to Wednesday morning with peak wind speeds expected on Tuesday night.
