Mexico says Google relabeled the entire gulf, including Mexican and Cuban maritime areas, but President Trump’s order applies only to the U.S. continental shelf.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said President Trump’s decree is restricted to the “continental shelf of the United States” because Mexico still controls much of the Gulf.

The name change to Gulf of America is the first since the 1540s where various maps referred to it as the Mexican Gulf, Golpho de la Nueva España, and, finally Gulf of Mexico.
