The NFL is officially going global. A week after confirming dates for a record seven international games on its 2025 schedule, the league announced it voted to approve potential player participation in the 2028 Summer Olympics.
NFL owners approved a resolution Wednesday allowing players to try out for flag football teams in the 2028 Olympics. The owners’ vote, which came at the spring league meeting in Minneapolis, was 32-0.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is one step closer to getting his wish. In the past, Burrow has indicated that he might like to play flag football at the Olympics, provided that becomes a thing for the sport that is currently enjoying an explosion in popularity.
The NFL officially charted new waters this week, voting on Tuesday to approve player participation in the 2028 Olympics, which will feature flag football as an international competition for the first time.
No more than one player per NFL club would be permitted. Olympic rosters will be selected by the national committee for each country.
NFL players will be able to participate in flag football in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles if other procedural steps are completed.
